Avery Dennison paxar application development


Paxar is a division of the Avery Dennison Corporation, and provides hand held and printer solutions to a variety of industries including Healthcare. Avery Dennison is a FORTUNE 500 company, with �4.1 billion of sales in 2007, employing more than 30,000 people in 60 countries.

Customer Situation

Paxar/Avery Dennison wanted to utilise its range of rugged handheld computers in the Healthcare area. Using the NHS 2005 Blood safety regulations, Avery looked for a partner company to specify and develop a Blood Tracking application which it could then sell on to NHS customers. After careful selection, Paxar selected Touchstone for the product development because of its NHS connections and experience with Blood Tracking/pathology systems.

Solution Provided

Touchstone specified and developed a full Blood Tracking range of products which was named Tervia by Paxar. This development consisted of a SQL Server main database, Windows CE handheld application (developed in Visual Studio), browser based administration and reporting system, and PC client based label production system. All solutions were developed with an agreed specification, and handed over to Paxar with them retaining all IPR for resale. In addition, Touchstone consultants provided sales assistance in form of technical resource, we provided after care support, and continued development resource for additional bolt-on developments including a prototype held-held order communications system, pathology HL7 interface, and integrated PAS interface.

Benefits of Service

The Tervia blood tracking solution has been sold to a number of NHS Trusts including KingsMill and Dorchester NHS Trusts. The solution was provided with the minimum of development cost to Paxar, who have gained sales value and visibility through the marketing of the product.

Methods Utilised

As part of the application, we undertook an assessment of likely competition from other Blood Tracking providers with recommendations to Paxar. We then provided outline specifications of design incorporating the Paxar and NHS Trust requirements, and carried out site surveys to ensure fit of the developed product. Once all information was collected, through consultation with Paxar, a platform was selected, development made and product delivered.

External Factors

Through our connections, Touchstone provided an introduction between the Blood Tracking supplier (Paxar) and representatives of the NHS national program for IT (BT and Connecting for Health) with the possibility of the Tervia application being deployed as part of the national service.
